Mr. Baoli Ma is the founder, chairman and the chief executive officer of BlueCity.
Ma has been selected as one of the “Top Global Thinkers” by the Foreign Policy magazine in 2017. He was also named among Business Insider’s 100 People Transforming Business in Asia in 2020.
In January 2021, he became the first person from the Chinese mainland to be recognized on the ‘OUTstanding 100 LGBT+ Executives List’ by INvolve, a global network and consultancy championing diversity and inclusion in business.
The journey of the company started in Qinhuangdao, a coastal city in northern China and it was also why “blue”, the color of the sea, is in the name of the company. It was 2000 when Ma, then a closeted policeman by the alias “Geng Le”, founded one of China’s first LGBTQ online forums, Danlan.org, the predecessor of the corporation.
Homosexuality was removed from an official list of mental illness in China the next year.
